In Like Wind and Water: Gathering Without Staying

〈바람이 되고 물이 되어 그곳에 닿을 때까지〉(2026)에서 누워 있는 사람들은 팔로 물결과 바람을 만들어 낸다. 이 동작들은 몸이 만나고 흩어지기를 반복하며 하나의 군무를 이룬다. 황금빛 햇볕 아래에서 책을 읽거나 쉬는 사람, 노래를 부르고 북을 치는 사람, 한 손으로 피아노를 치는 사람, 구경하는 아이와 서로 기대어 앉은 노인들. 이들은 저마다의 방식으로, 각자의 속도로 풍경 속에 머문다.
작가는 그림을 그리며 우리 몸 어딘가에 존재하는 ‘퀴어함’을 사유한다. 이는 사회가 정한 단단한 폐곡선(閉曲線) 안에 갇히기를 거부하는 일이다. 동시에 퀴어함은 삶과 동행하며 변화하는 ‘동반 존재’와 같은 우리 안의 한 면모다. 각자가 선택한 삶의 방식에 따라 퀴어함의 형태와 속성은 다르기에, 누군가는 그 존재를 밖으로 드러내고, 누군가는 이를 내면으로 껴안는다.
제목이 말하듯, 그림 속 인물들은 아직 도래하지 않은 ‘그곳’에 닿을 때까지 멈추지 않을 것임을 보여 준다. 이들은 바람이 되고 물이 되어 고정된 틀에 안주하지 않고 서로를 가로지른다. 질문하고 사랑하며 온전히 살아내는 것. 작가는 이 작업을 통해 삶과 동반하여 흐르는 퀴어풀(Queerful)한 상태를 꿈꾼다.
In Like Wind and Water: Gathering Without Staying (2026), reclining figures make waves and wind with their arms. The movements become a collective dance as their bodies come together and separate again and again: people resting or reading in the golden sunlight, people singing and playing the drums, people playing piano with one hand, onlooking children, and seniors resting against each other. Each of them lingers in the landscape in their own way and their own tempo.
In creating his paintings, the artist contemplates the “queerness” that exists somewhere in our bodies. This is a rejection of confinement in the rigid closed curves that our society imposes. Queerness also represents an inner aspect of ourselves that is like a companion, changing with us as we go through life. The form and nature of queerness differ with the way each of us chooses to live: some people reveal its presence outwardly, while others embrace it within.
As the title suggests, the people in the image will not stop until they reach a certain place that has yet to arrive. The figures become wind and water, crossing over one another rather than resting in defined frames. It is a matter of living fully while questioning and sharing love. Through his work, the artist dreams of a “queerful” state that flows together with life.
