이우성(b. 1983, 서울)은 홍익대학교 회화과를 졸업한 후, 한국예술종합학교 조형예술과 평면전공 전문사를 졸업했다. 그의 작업은 일상 속 풍경을 관찰하며 자신의 경험에서 길어 올린 이야기를 회화로 풀어내는 데 집중해 왔다. 거리나 집처럼 익숙한 장소가 생경하게 다가오는 순간에 주목하며, 사랑하는 이와의 기억이나 사람들의 열기처럼 몸이 기억하는 에너지가 공간을 다르게 감각하게 할 때 이를 화면으로 옮긴다. 리얼리즘 인물화와 풍속화, 민중미술, 90년대 극장간판, 만화 등의 영향을 받아 시작한 커다란 천 그림부터 만화 드로잉, 애니메이션에 이르는 매체적 실험을 통해 작가 본인과 주변 사람들의 삶, 청춘, 연대, 퀴어 로맨스 등의 주제를 화면 안으로 적극적으로 불러들인다. 최근에는 꿀렁울렁한 형태의 자화상 연작을 거쳐 상상 속 인물들로 지평을 넓히며, 고정된 틀에 머물지 않는 존재의 형상과 삶의 방식을 고민하고 있다. 이렇듯 개별자들이 어우러지는 찰나를 포착하여 반짝이는 특별함을 시각화하고, 이것이 관람객 개개인의 기억과 맞닿아 또 다른 연결로 이어지기를 희망한다.

Woosung Lee (b. 1983, Seoul) received his BFA in Painting from Hongik University and an MFA in Fine Arts from Korea National University of Arts. His practice centers on observing scenes from everyday life and developing paintings from stories rooted in personal experience. Paying close attention to moments when familiar places—such as streets or home—suddenly appear unfamiliar, he explores how embodied memories, the warmth of loved ones, and the energy of human connection reshape one's perception of space.

Drawing on realism portraiture, genre painting, Minjung art, 1990s cinema billboards, and comics, Lee has expanded his practice across large-scale paintings on fabric, comic drawings, and animation. Through these diverse forms, he brings the stories of his own life and those of the people around him—including family, friends, youth, solidarity, and queer romance—into his work, weaving lived experiences into painted narratives.

Recently, moving beyond a series of self-portraits featuring fluid, sagging, amorphous forms, Lee has expanded his practice to include imagined figures, exploring modes of existence and ways of living that resist fixed frameworks. Through these figures, he captures fleeting moments in which distinct individuals come together, allowing the unique radiance of each person to emerge.
